If the offense permanently disables or disfigures the animal, or causes serious bodily injury to or the death of the animal, the maximum term of imprisonment shall be 10 years.</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\" id=\"id74adce1a-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s1368/b\"><num value=\"b\">(b)</num><content> In this section, the term “police animal” means a dog or horse employed by a Federal agency (whether in the executive, legislative, or judicial branch) for the principal purpose of aiding in the detection of criminal activity, enforcement of laws, or apprehension of criminal offenders.</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id74adce1b-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\">(Added <ref href=\"/us/pl/106/254/s2/a\">Pub.
