L. 107–56, title VIII, § 802(b), Oct. 26, 2001, 115 Stat. 376.)","seq_in_title":997,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t18/ptII/ch204","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t18","level":"title","num":"Title 18—","heading":"CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t18/ptII","level":"part","num":"PART II—","heading":"CRIMINAL PROCEDURE","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t18/ptII/ch204","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 204—","heading":"REWARDS FOR INFORMATION CONCERNING TERRORIST ACTS AND ESPIONAGE","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id753351b2-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077\"><num value=\"3077\">§ 3077.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>\n<chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">As used in this chapter, the term—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351b3-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> “act of terrorism” means an act of domestic or international terrorism as defined in section 2331;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351b4-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><chapeau> “United States person” means—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351b5-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><content> a national of the United States as defined in section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<ref href=\"/us/usc/t8/s1101/a/22\">8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(22)</ref>);</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351b6-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States as defined in section 101(a)(20) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (<ref href=\"/us/usc/t8/s1101/a/20\">8 U.S.C. 1101(a)(20)</ref>);</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351b7-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/C\"><num value=\"C\">(C)</num><content> any person within the United States;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351b8-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/D\"><num value=\"D\">(D)</num><content> any employee or contractor of the United States Government, regardless of nationality, who is the victim or intended victim of an act of terrorism by virtue of that employment;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351b9-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/E\"><num value=\"E\">(E)</num><content> a sole proprietorship, partnership, company, or association composed principally of nationals or permanent resident aliens of the United States; and</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351ba-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/2/F\"><num value=\"F\">(F)</num><content> a corporation organized under the laws of the United States, any State, the District of Columbia, or any territory or possession of the United States, and a foreign subsidiary of such corporation;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351bb-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> “United States property” means any real or personal property which is within the United States or, if outside the United States, the actual or beneficial ownership of which rests in a United States person or any Federal or State governmental entity of the United States;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351bc-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> “United States”, when used in a geographical sense, includes Puerto Rico and all territories and possessions of the United States;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351bd-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> “State” includes any State of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and any other possession or territory of the United States;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351be-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/6\"><num value=\"6\">(6)</num><content> “government entity” includes the Government of the United States, any State or political subdivision thereof, any foreign country, and any state, provincial, municipal, or other political subdivision of a foreign country;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351bf-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/7\"><num value=\"7\">(7)</num><content> “Attorney General” means the Attorney General of the United States or that official designated by the Attorney General to perform the Attorney General’s responsibilities under this chapter; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id753351c0-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/8\"><num value=\"8\">(8)</num><chapeau> “act of espionage” means an activity that is a violation of—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351c1-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/8/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><content> section 793, 794, or 798 of this title; or</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id753351c2-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t18/s3077/8/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> section 4 of the Subversive Activities Control Act of 1950.</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id753351c3-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf\">(Added <ref href=\"/us/pl/98/533/tI/s101/a\">Pub. (1) read as follows: “ ‘act of terrorism’ means an activity that—</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I22\" class=\"indent1\">“(A) involves a violent act or an act dangerous to human life that is a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or of any State; and</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I22\" class=\"indent1\">“(B) appears to be intended—</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I23\" class=\"indent2\">“(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I23\" class=\"indent2\">“(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I23\" class=\"indent2\">“(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by assassination or kidnapping;”.</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I21\" class=\"indent0\">1996—Par. (8)(A). <ref href=\"/us/pl/104/294\">Pub. L. 104–294</ref> substituted “this title” for “title 18, United States Code”.</p>\n<p style=\"-uslm-lc:I21\" class=\"indent0\">1994—Par.
