<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id753a7dd4-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156"><num value="3156">§ 3156.</num><heading> Definitions</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id753a7dd5-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><chapeau> As used in sections 3141–3150 of this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7dd6-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> the term “judicial officer” means, unless otherwise indicated, any person or court authorized pursuant to <ref href="/us/usc/t18/s3041">section 3041 of this title</ref>, or the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, to detain or release a person before trial or sentencing or pending appeal in a court of the United States, and any judge of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7dd7-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> the term “offense” means any criminal offense, other than an offense triable by court-martial, military commission, provost court, or other military tribunal, which is in violation of an Act of Congress and is triable in any court established by Act of Congress;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7dd8-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> the term “felony” means an offense punishable by a maximum term of imprisonment of more than one year;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7dd9-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><chapeau> the term “crime of violence” means—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id753a7dda-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/4/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> an offense that has as an element of the offense the use, attempted use, or threatened use of physical force against the person or property of another;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id753a7ddb-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/4/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> any other offense that is a felony and that, by its nature, involves a substantial risk that physical force against the person or property of another may be used in the course of committing the offense; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id753a7ddc-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/4/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> any felony under chapter 77, 109A, 110, or 117; and</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7ddd-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/a/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><content> the term “State” includes a State of the United States, the District of Columbia, and any commonwealth, territory, or possession of the United States.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id753a7dde-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><chapeau> As used in sections 3152–3155 of this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id753a7ddf-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3156/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> the term “judicial officer” means, unless otherwise indicated, any person or court authorized pursuant to <ref href="/us/usc/t18/s3041">section 3041 of this title</ref>, or the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, to detain or release a person before trial or sentencing or pending appeal in a court of the United States, and</content>
