<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id75500129-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3573"><num value="3573">§ 3573.</num><heading> Petition of the Government for modification or remission</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">Upon petition of the Government showing that reasonable efforts to collect a fine or assessment are not likely to be effective, the court may, in the interest of justice—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id7550012a-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3573/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> remit all or part of the unpaid portion of the fine or special assessment, including interest and penalties;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id7550012b-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3573/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> defer payment of the fine or special assessment to a date certain or pursuant to an installment schedule; or</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id7550012c-3b28-11eb-ad8c-9fba61cd9daf" identifier="/us/usc/t18/s3573/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> extend a date certain or an installment schedule previously ordered.</content>
</paragraph>

<continuation style="-uslm-lc:I10" class="indent0 firstIndent0">A petition under this subsection shall be filed in the court in which sentence was originally imposed, unless the court transfers jurisdiction to another court. This section shall apply to all fines and assessments irrespective of the date of imposition.</continuation>
