<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For the purposes of this subchapter—</chapeau><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id6c78dec7-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s1720/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><content> The term “educational agency” means a local educational agency or a “State educational agency” as defined by section 801(k) <ref class="footnoteRef" idref="fn002118">1</ref><note type="footnote" id="fn002118"><num>1</num> See References in Text note below.</note> of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id6c78dec8-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s1720/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><content> The term “local educational agency” means a local educational agency as defined by section 801(f) <sup>1</sup> of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id6c78dec9-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s1720/c"><num value="c">(c)</num><content> The term “segregation” means the operation of a school system in which students are wholly or substantially separated among the schools of an educational agency on the basis of race, color, sex, or national origin or within a school on the basis of race, color, or national origin.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id6c78deca-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s1720/d"><num value="d">(d)</num><content> The term “desegregation” means desegregation as defined by <ref href="/us/usc/t42/s2000c/b">section 2000c(b) of title 42</ref>.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id6c78decb-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s1720/e"><num value="e">(e)</num><content> An educational agency shall be deemed to transport a student if any part of the cost of such student’s transportation is paid by such agency.</content>
