<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id82deeb6b-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417"><num value="4417">§ 4417.</num><heading> Functions of Institute</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id82deeb6c-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> Primary functions</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The primary functions of the Institute shall be—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id82deeb6d-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> to provide scholarly study of, and instruction in, Indian art and culture, and</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id82deeb6e-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> to establish programs which culminate in the awarding of degrees in the various fields of Indian art and culture.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id82deeb6f-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> Administrative entities</heading><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id82deeb70-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The Board shall be responsible for establishing the policies and internal organization that relate to the control and monitoring of all subdivisions, administrative entities, and departments of the Institute.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id82deeb71-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> The specific responsibilities of each subdivision, entity, and department of the Institute are solely within the discretion of the Board, or its designee.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id82deeb72-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/b/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> The Board shall establish, within the Institute, departments for the study of culture and arts and for research and exchange, and a museum. The Board shall establish the areas of competency for the departments created under this paragraph, which may include (but are not limited to) Departments of Arts and Sciences, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Language, Literature and Museology and a learning resources center, programs of institutional support and development, research programs, fellowship programs, seminars, publications, scholar-in-residence programs and inter-institutional programs of cooperation at national and international levels.</content>
</paragraph>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id82deeb73-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c"><num value="c" class="bold">(c)</num><heading class="bold"> Other programs</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In addition to the centers and programs described in subsection (b), the Institute shall develop such programs and centers as the Board determines are necessary to—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id82deeb74-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> foster research and scholarship in Indian art and culture through—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id82deeb75-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> resident programs;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id82deeb76-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> cooperative programs; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id82deeb77-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/1/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> grant programs;</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id82deeb78-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> complement existing tribal programs for the advancement of Indian art and culture; and</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id82deeb79-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s4417/c/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> coordinate efforts to preserve, support, revitalize, and develop evolving forms of Indian art and culture.</content>
