L. 103–227, title VII, § 706, Mar. 31, 1994, 108 Stat. 208.)","seq_in_title":1452,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch68/schVII","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20","level":"title","num":"Title 20—","heading":"EDUCATION","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch68","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 68—","heading":"NATIONAL EDUCATION REFORM","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch68/schVII","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER VII—","heading":"SAFE SCHOOLS","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id82ed43bc-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966\"><num value=\"5966\">§ 5966.</num><heading> National activities</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id82ed43bd-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> National activities</heading><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id82ed43be-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1\"><num value=\"1\" class=\"bold\">(1)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">To carry out the purpose of this subchapter, the Secretary—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id82ed43bf-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><chapeau> is authorized to use funds reserved under <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s5962/b/2\">section 5962(b)(2) of this title</ref> to—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id82ed43c0-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1/A/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><content> conduct national leadership activities such as research, program development and evaluation, data collection, public awareness activities, training and technical assistance, dissemination (through appropriate research entities assisted by the Department of Education) of information on successful projects, activities, and strategies developed pursuant to this subchapter;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id82ed43c1-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1/A/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> provide grants to noncommercial telecommunications entities for the production and distribution of national video-based projects that provide young people with models for conflict resolution and responsible decisionmaking; and</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id82ed43c2-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1/A/iii\"><num value=\"iii\">(iii)</num><content> conduct peer review of applications under this subchapter; and</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id82ed43c3-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/1/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> shall develop a written safe schools model so that all schools can develop models that enable all students to participate regardless of any language barrier.</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id82ed43c4-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/a/2\"><num value=\"2\" class=\"bold\">(2)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Special rule</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The Secretary may carry out the activities described in paragraph (1) directly, through interagency agreements, or through grants, contracts or cooperative agreements.</p>\n</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id82ed43c5-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s5966/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> National model city</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The Secretary shall designate the District of Columbia as a national model city and shall provide funds made available pursuant to <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s5962/b/2\">section 5962(b)(2) of this title</ref> in each fiscal year to a local educational agency serving the District of Columbia in an amount sufficient to enable such agency to carry out a comprehensive program to address school and youth violence.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id82ed43c6-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/103/227/tVII/s706\">Pub.
