<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id833262e7-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663"><num value="6663">§ 6663.</num><heading> National activities</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id833262e8-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> Purpose</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The purpose of this section is to promote new and existing evidence-based strategies to encourage innovative American history, civics and government, and geography instruction, learning strategies, and professional development activities and programs for teachers, principals, or other school leaders, particularly such instruction, strategies, activities, and programs that benefit low-income students and underserved populations.</p>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id833262e9-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> In general</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">From the amounts reserved by the Secretary under <ref href="/us/usc/t20/s6661/b/2">section 6661(b)(2) of this title</ref>, the Secretary shall award grants, on a competitive basis, to eligible entities for the purposes of expanding, developing, implementing, evaluating, and disseminating for voluntary use, innovative, evidence-based approaches or professional development programs in American history, civics and government, and geography, which—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id833262ea-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> shall—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id833262eb-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> show potential to improve the quality of student achievement in, and teaching of, American history, civics and government, or geography, in elementary schools and secondary schools; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id833262ec-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> demonstrate innovation, scalability, accountability, and a focus on underserved populations; and</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id833262ed-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><chapeau> may include—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id833262ee-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> hands-on civic engagement activities for teachers and students; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id833262ef-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/b/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> programs that educate students about the history and principles of the Constitution of the United States, including the Bill of Rights.</content>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f0-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/c"><num value="c" class="bold">(c)</num><heading class="bold"> Program periods and diversity of projects</heading><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f1-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/c/1"><num value="1" class="bold">(1)</num><heading class="bold"> In general</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">A grant awarded by the Secretary to an eligible entity under this section shall be for a period of not more than 3 years.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f2-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/c/2"><num value="2" class="bold">(2)</num><heading class="bold"> Renewal</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The Secretary may renew a grant awarded under this section for 1 additional 2-year period.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f3-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/c/3"><num value="3" class="bold">(3)</num><heading class="bold"> Diversity of projects</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">In awarding grants under this section, the Secretary shall ensure that, to the extent practicable, grants are distributed among eligible entities that will serve geographically diverse areas, including urban, suburban, and rural areas.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f4-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/d"><num value="d" class="bold">(d)</num><heading class="bold"> Applications</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In order to receive a grant under this section, an eligible entity shall submit an application to the Secretary at such time and in such manner as the Secretary may reasonably require.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id833262f5-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s6663/e"><num value="e" class="bold">(e)</num><heading class="bold"> Eligible entity</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In this section, the term “eligible entity” means an institution of higher education or other nonprofit or for-profit organization with demonstrated expertise in the development of evidence-based approaches with the potential to improve the quality of American history, civics and government, or geography learning and teaching.</p>
