L. 114–95, title IV, § 4101, Dec. 10, 2015, 129 Stat. 1977.)","seq_in_title":1621,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch70/schIV/ptA/spt1","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20","level":"title","num":"Title 20—","heading":"EDUCATION","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch70","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 70—","heading":"STRENGTHENING AND IMPROVEMENT OF ELEMENTARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch70/schIV","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER IV—","heading":"21ST CENTURY SCHOOLS","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch70/schIV/ptA","level":"part","num":"Part A—","heading":"Student Support and Academic Enrichment Grants","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch70/schIV/ptA/spt1","level":"subpart","num":"subpart 1—","heading":"student support and academic enrichment grants","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id833e4a1c-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117\"><num value=\"7117\">§ 7117.</num><heading> Activities to support well-rounded educational opportunities</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id833e4a1d-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">Subject to <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s7116/f\">section 7116(f) of this title</ref>, each local educational agency, or consortium of such agencies, that receives an allocation under <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s7115/a\">section 7115(a) of this title</ref> shall use a portion of such funds to develop and implement programs and activities that support access to a well-rounded education and that—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id833e4a1e-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> are coordinated with other schools and community-based services and programs;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id833e4a1f-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> may be conducted in partnership with an institution of higher education, business, nonprofit organization, community-based organization, or other public or private entity with a demonstrated record of success in implementing activities under this section; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id833e4a20-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><chapeau> may include programs and activities, such as—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a21-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><chapeau> college and career guidance and counseling programs, such as—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a22-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/A/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><content> postsecondary education and career awareness and exploration activities;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a23-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/A/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> training counselors to effectively use labor market information in assisting students with postsecondary education and career planning; and</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a24-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/A/iii\"><num value=\"iii\">(iii)</num><content> financial literacy and Federal financial aid awareness activities;</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a25-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> programs and activities that use music and the arts as tools to support student success through the promotion of constructive student engagement, problem solving, and conflict resolution;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a26-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C\"><num value=\"C\">(C)</num><chapeau> programming and activities to improve instruction and student engagement in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, including computer science, (referred to in this section as “STEM subjects”) such as—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a27-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><content> increasing access for students through grade 12 who are members of groups underrepresented in such subject fields, such as female students, minority students, English learners, children with disabilities, and economically disadvantaged students, to high-quality courses;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a28-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> supporting the participation of low-income students in nonprofit competitions related to STEM subjects (such as robotics, science research, invention, mathematics, computer science, and technology competitions);</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a29-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/iii\"><num value=\"iii\">(iii)</num><content> providing hands-on learning and exposure to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and supporting the use of field-based or service learning to enhance the students’ understanding of the STEM subjects;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a2a-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/iv\"><num value=\"iv\">(iv)</num><content> supporting the creation and enhancement of STEM-focused specialty schools;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a2b-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/v\"><num value=\"v\">(v)</num><content> facilitating collaboration among school, after-school program, and informal program personnel to improve the integration of programming and instruction in the identified subjects; and</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a2c-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/C/vi\"><num value=\"vi\">(vi)</num><content> integrating other academic subjects, including the arts, into STEM subject programs to increase participation in STEM subjects, improve attainment of skills related to STEM subjects, and promote well-rounded education;</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a2d-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/D\"><num value=\"D\">(D)</num><chapeau> efforts to raise student academic achievement through accelerated learning programs described in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s7114/b/3/A/i/IV\">section 7114(b)(3)(A)(i)(IV) of this title</ref>, such as—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a2e-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/D/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><content> reimbursing low-income students to cover part or all of the costs of accelerated learning examination fees, if the low-income students are enrolled in accelerated learning courses and plan to take accelerated learning examinations; or</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id833e4a2f-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/D/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> increasing the availability of, and enrollment in, accelerated learning courses, accelerated learning examinations, dual or concurrent enrollment programs, and early college high school courses;</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a30-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/E\"><num value=\"E\">(E)</num><content> activities to promote the development, implementation, and strengthening of programs to teach traditional American history, civics, economics, geography, or government education;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a31-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/F\"><num value=\"F\">(F)</num><content> foreign language instruction;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a32-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/G\"><num value=\"G\">(G)</num><content> environmental education;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a33-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/H\"><num value=\"H\">(H)</num><content> programs and activities that promote volunteerism and community involvement;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a34-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/I\"><num value=\"I\">(I)</num><content> programs and activities that support educational programs that integrate multiple disciplines, such as programs that combine arts and mathematics; or</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id833e4a35-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/a/3/J\"><num value=\"J\">(J)</num><content> other activities and programs to support student access to, and success in, a variety of well-rounded education experiences.</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id833e4a36-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s7117/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Special rule</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">A local educational agency, or consortium of such agencies, that receives a subgrant under this subpart for fiscal year 2017 may use such funds to cover part or all of the fees for accelerated learning examinations taken by low-income students during the 2016-2017 school year, in accordance with subsection (a)(3)(D).</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id833e4a37-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/89/10/tIV/s4107\">Pub.
