<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id6d042f99-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171"><num value="9171">§ 9171.</num><heading> Purpose</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">It is the purpose of this subchapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9a-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> to encourage and support museums in carrying out their educational role, as core providers of learning and in conjunction with schools, families, and communities;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9b-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> to encourage and support museums in carrying out their public service role of connecting the whole of society to the cultural, artistic, historical, natural, and scientific understandings that constitute our diverse heritage;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9c-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> to encourage leadership, innovation, and applications of the most current technologies and practices to enhance museum services through international, national, regional, State, and local networks and partnerships;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9d-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> to assist, encourage, and support museums in carrying out their stewardship responsibilities to achieve the highest standards in conservation and care of the diverse cultural, historic, natural, and scientific heritage of the United States to benefit future generations;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9e-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><content> to assist, encourage, and support museums in achieving the highest standards of management and service to the public, and to ease the financial burden borne by museums as they serve their communities in new and different ways;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042f9f-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> to support resource sharing and partnerships among museums, libraries, schools, and other community organizations;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042fa0-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> to encourage and support museums as a part of economic development and revitalization in communities;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d042fa1-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/8"><num value="8">(8)</num><content> to ensure museums of various types and sizes in diverse geographic regions of the United States are afforded attention and support;</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d0455b2-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/9"><num value="9">(9)</num><content> to support efforts at the State and regional levels to leverage museum resources and maximize museum services; and</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id6d0455b3-d2f2-11e9-aa7d-f436298d01bb" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9171/10"><num value="10">(10)</num><content> to assist museums in their civic engagement efforts to ensure that every person in the United States has access to high-quality museum services.</content>
