L. 111–358, title V, § 555, Jan. 4, 2011, 124 Stat. 4025.)","seq_in_title":1996,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch79","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20","level":"title","num":"Title 20—","heading":"EDUCATION","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t20/ch79","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 79—","heading":"STEM-TRAINING GRANT PROGRAM","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id83ba57fe-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905\"><num value=\"9905\">§ 9905.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>\n<chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">In this chapter:</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id83ba57ff-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/1\"><num value=\"1\" class=\"bold\">(1)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Field-based course</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The term “field-based course” means a course of instruction offered by an institution of higher education that includes a requirement that students teach a minimum of 3 lessons or sequences of lessons to elementary or secondary students.</p>\n</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id83ba5800-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/2\"><num value=\"2\" class=\"bold\">(2)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Institution of higher education</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The term “institution of higher education” has the meaning given that term by <ref href=\"/us/usc/t20/s1001\">section 1001 of this title</ref>.</p>\n</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id83ba5801-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/3\"><num value=\"3\" class=\"bold\">(3)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Master teacher</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The term “master teacher” means an individual—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id83ba5802-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><content> who has been awarded a master’s or doctoral degree by an institution of higher education;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id83ba5803-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> whose graduate coursework included courses in mathematics, science, computer science, or engineering;</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id83ba5804-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/C\"><num value=\"C\">(C)</num><content> who has at least 3 years teaching experience in K–12 settings; and</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id83ba5805-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/D\"><num value=\"D\">(D)</num><content> whose teaching has been recognized for exceptional accomplishments in educating students, or is demonstrated to have resulted in improved student achievement.</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id83ba5806-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/4\"><num value=\"4\" class=\"bold\">(4)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Mentor teacher</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The term “mentor teacher” means an elementary or secondary school classroom teacher who assists with the training of students participating in a field-based course.</p>\n</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I79\" class=\"indent3 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id83ba5807-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t20/s9905/5\"><num value=\"5\" class=\"bold\">(5)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Director</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\">The term “Director” means the Director of the National Science Foundation.</p>\n</content>\n</paragraph>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id83ba5808-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/111/358/tV/s555\">Pub.
