<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In this chapter:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id83ba57ff-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/1"><num value="1" class="bold">(1)</num><heading class="bold"> Field-based course</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “field-based course” means a course of instruction offered by an institution of higher education that includes a requirement that students teach a minimum of 3 lessons or sequences of lessons to elementary or secondary students.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id83ba5800-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/2"><num value="2" class="bold">(2)</num><heading class="bold"> Institution of higher education</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “institution of higher education” has the meaning given that term by <ref href="/us/usc/t20/s1001">section 1001 of this title</ref>.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id83ba5801-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/3"><num value="3" class="bold">(3)</num><heading class="bold"> Master teacher</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “master teacher” means an individual—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id83ba5802-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> who has been awarded a master’s or doctoral degree by an institution of higher education;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id83ba5803-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> whose graduate coursework included courses in mathematics, science, computer science, or engineering;</content>

<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id83ba5804-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> who has at least 3 years teaching experience in K–12 settings; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id83ba5805-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/3/D"><num value="D">(D)</num><content> whose teaching has been recognized for exceptional accomplishments in educating students, or is demonstrated to have resulted in improved student achievement.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id83ba5806-3b28-11eb-8459-b1d1037aec5b" identifier="/us/usc/t20/s9905/4"><num value="4" class="bold">(4)</num><heading class="bold"> Mentor teacher</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “mentor teacher” means an elementary or secondary school classroom teacher who assists with the training of students participating in a field-based course.</p>
