style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idae90155b-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The Secretary of Health and Human Services (referred to in this section as the “Secretary”) shall intensify and expand activities related to enhancing scientific knowledge regarding nanomaterials included or intended for inclusion in products regulated under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (<ref href=\"/us/usc/t21/s301\">21 U.S.C. 301</ref> et seq.) or other statutes administered by the Food and Drug Administration, to address issues relevant to the regulation of those products, including the potential toxicology of such nanomaterials, the potential benefit of new therapies derived from nanotechnology, the effects of such nanomaterials on biological systems, and the interaction of such nanomaterials with biological systems.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idae90155c-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Activities</heading><chapeau>In conducting activities related to nanotechnology, the Secretary may—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae90155d-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> assess scientific literature and data on general nanomaterials interactions with biological systems and on specific nanomaterials of concern to the Food and Drug Administration;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae90155e-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> in cooperation with other Federal agencies, develop and organize information using databases and models that will facilitate the identification of generalized principles and characteristics regarding the behavior of classes of nanomaterials with biological systems;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae90155f-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> promote Food and Drug Administration programs and participate in collaborative efforts, to further the understanding of the science of novel properties of nanomaterials that might contribute to toxicity;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901560-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> promote and participate in collaborative efforts to further the understanding of measurement and detection methods for nanomaterials;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901561-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> collect, synthesize, interpret, and disseminate scientific information and data related to the interactions of nanomaterials with biological systems;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901562-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/6\"><num value=\"6\">(6)</num><content> build scientific expertise on nanomaterials within the Food and Drug Administration, including field and laboratory expertise, for monitoring the production and presence of nanomaterials in domestic and imported products regulated under this Act;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901563-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/7\"><num value=\"7\">(7)</num><content> ensure ongoing training, as well as dissemination of new information within the centers of the Food and Drug Administration, and more broadly across the Food and Drug Administration, to ensure timely, informed consideration of the most current science pertaining to nanomaterials;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901564-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/8\"><num value=\"8\">(8)</num><content> encourage the Food and Drug Administration to participate in international and national consensus standards activities pertaining to nanomaterials; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idae901565-ec38-11e5-9fc5-818d616f3d7f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t21/s399e/b/9\"><num value=\"9\">(9)</num><content> carry out other activities that the Secretary determines are necessary and
