However, the appropriation or fund is not available for expenditure for a period beyond the period otherwise authorized by law.</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\" id=\"id64f1135d-09a0-11eb-aef4-a3bf4c466baf\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t31/s1502/b\"><num value=\"b\">(b)</num><content> A provision of law requiring that the balance of an appropriation or fund be returned to the general fund of the Treasury at the end of a definite period does not affect the status of lawsuits or rights of action involving the right to an amount payable from the balance.</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id64f1135e-09a0-11eb-aef4-a3bf4c466baf\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/97/258\">Pub.
