S, title V, § 502(4), Mar. 23, 2018, 132 Stat. 1131.)","seq_in_title":171,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stI/ch101/schXXVI","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34","level":"title","num":"Title 34—","heading":"CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stI","level":"subtitle","num":"Subtitle I—","heading":"Comprehensive Acts","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stI/ch101","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 101—","heading":"JUSTICE SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stI/ch101/schXXVI","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER XXVI—","heading":"MATCHING GRANT PROGRAM FOR SCHOOL SECURITY","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id152b6649-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554\"><num value=\"10554\">§ 10554.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>\n<chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">For purposes of this subchapter—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id152b664a-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> the term “school” means an elementary or secondary school, including a Bureau-funded school (as defined in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t25/s2021\">section 2021 of title 25</ref>);</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id152b664b-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> the term “unit of local government” means a county, municipality, town, township, village, parish, borough, or other unit of general government below the State level;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id152b664c-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> the term “Indian tribe” has the same meaning as in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t25/s5304/e\">section 5304(e) of title 25</ref>;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id152b664d-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><chapeau> the term “evidence-based” means a program, practice, technology, or equipment that—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id152b664e-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><chapeau> demonstrates a statistically significant effect on relevant outcomes based on—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id152b664f-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/A/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><content> strong evidence from not less than 1 well-designed and well-implemented experimental study;</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id152b6650-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/A/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> moderate evidence from not less than 1 well-designed and well-implemented quasi-experimental study; or</content>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id152b6651-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/A/iii\"><num value=\"iii\">(iii)</num><content> promising evidence from not less than 1 well-designed and well-implemented correlational study with statistical controls for selection bias;</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id152b8d62-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> demonstrates a rationale based on high-quality research findings or positive evaluation that such program, practice, technology, or equipment is likely to improve relevant outcomes, and includes ongoing efforts to examine the effects of the program, practice, technology, or equipment; or</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id152b8d63-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/C\"><num value=\"C\">(C)</num><chapeau> in the case of technology or equipment, demonstrates that use of the technology or equipment is—</chapeau><clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id152b8d64-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/C/i\"><num value=\"i\">(i)</num><chapeau> consistent with best practices for school security, including—</chapeau><subclause style=\"-uslm-lc:I16\" class=\"indent4\" id=\"id152b8d65-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/C/i/I\"><num value=\"I\">(I)</num><content> applicable standards for school security established by a Federal or State government agency; and</content>\n</subclause>\n<subclause style=\"-uslm-lc:I16\" class=\"indent4\" id=\"id152b8d66-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/C/i/II\"><num value=\"II\">(II)</num><content> findings and recommendations of public commissions and task forces established to make recommendations or set standards for school security; and</content>\n</subclause>\n</clause>\n<clause style=\"-uslm-lc:I14\" class=\"indent3\" id=\"id152b8d67-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/4/C/ii\"><num value=\"ii\">(ii)</num><content> compliant with all applicable codes, including building and life safety codes; and</content>\n</clause>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id152b8d68-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s10554/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> the term “tribal organization” has the same meaning given the term in section 5304(<i>l</i>) of title 25.</content>\n</paragraph>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id152b8d69-8160-11e9-8f35-c624b526f388\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/90/351/tI/s2704\">Pub.
