L. 109–248, title VI, § 625, July 27, 2006, 120 Stat. 636.)","seq_in_title":536,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stII/ch209/schIII","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34","level":"title","num":"Title 34—","heading":"CRIME CONTROL AND LAW ENFORCEMENT","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stII","level":"subtitle","num":"Subtitle II—","heading":"Protection of Children and Other Persons","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stII/ch209","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 209—","heading":"CHILD PROTECTION AND SAFETY","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t34/stII/ch209/schIII","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER III—","heading":"GRANTS AND OTHER PROVISIONS","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id26d14bcd-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983\"><num value=\"20983\">§ 20983.</num><heading> Grants to combat sexual abuse of children</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id26d14bce-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The Bureau of Justice Assistance is authorized to make grants under this section—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id26d14bcf-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/a/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> to any law enforcement agency that serves a jurisdiction with 50,000 or more residents; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id26d14bd0-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/a/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> to any law enforcement agency that serves a jurisdiction with fewer than 50,000 residents, upon a showing of need.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id26d14bd1-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Use of grant amounts</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">Grants under this section may be used by the law enforcement agency to—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id26d14bd2-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/b/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> hire additional law enforcement personnel or train existing staff to combat the sexual abuse of children through community education and outreach, investigation of complaints, enforcement of laws relating to sex offender registries, and management of released sex offenders;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id26d172e3-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/b/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> investigate the use of the Internet to facilitate the sexual abuse of children; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id26d172e4-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/b/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> purchase computer hardware and software necessary to investigate sexual abuse of children over the Internet, access local, State, and Federal databases needed to apprehend sex offenders, and facilitate the creation and enforcement of sex offender registries.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id26d172e5-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/c\"><num value=\"c\" class=\"bold\">(c)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Criteria</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The Attorney General shall give priority to law enforcement agencies making a showing of need.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id26d172e6-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t34/s20983/d\"><num value=\"d\" class=\"bold\">(d)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Authorization of appropriations</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">There are authorized to be appropriated such sums as may be necessary for fiscal years 2007 through 2009 to carry out this section.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id26d172e7-0f21-11eb-9212-a1a9175aa019\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/109/248/tVI/s625\">Pub.
