<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id54971399-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783"><num value="1783">§ 1783.</num><heading> Bereavement counseling</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5497139a-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Deaths of Veterans</inline>.—</heading><chapeau>In the case of an individual who was a recipient of services under <ref href="/us/usc/t38/s1782">section 1782 of this title</ref> at the time of the death of the veteran, the Secretary may provide bereavement counseling to that individual in the case of a death—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5497139b-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> that was unexpected; or</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5497139c-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> that occurred while the veteran was participating in a hospice program (or a similar program) conducted by the Secretary.</content>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5497139d-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Deaths In Active Service</inline>.—</heading><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5497139e-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The Secretary may provide bereavement counseling to an individual who is a member of the immediate family of a member of the Armed Forces who dies in the active military, naval, or air service in the line of duty and under circumstances not due to the person’s own misconduct.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5497139f-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> For purposes of this subsection, the members of the immediate family of a member of the Armed Forces described in paragraph (1) include the parents of such member.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id549713a0-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/c"><num value="c">(c)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Provision of Counseling Through Vet Centers</inline>.—</heading><content>Bereavement counseling may be provided under this section through the facilities and personnel of centers for the provision of readjustment counseling and related mental health services under <ref href="/us/usc/t38/s1712A">section 1712A of this title</ref>.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id549713a1-f67d-11e5-8cc7-9b652666228a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1783/d"><num value="d">(d)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Bereavement Counseling Defined</inline>.—</heading><content>For purposes of this section, the term “bereavement counseling” means such counseling services, for a limited period, as the Secretary determines to be reasonable and necessary to assist an individual with the emotional and psychological stress accompanying the death of another individual.</content>
