<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="idd9365d78-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949"><num value="1949">§ 1949.</num><heading> Beneficiaries</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="idd9365d79-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Designation</inline>.—</heading><content>A person who enrolls in United States Government life insurance may designate a beneficiary of the insurance policy. Subject to regulations, the insured person shall at all times have the right to change the beneficiary or beneficiaries of a United States Government life insurance policy without the consent of such beneficiary or beneficiaries.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="idd9365d7a-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Determination in Cases of Non-Designation</inline>.—</heading><chapeau>If a person enrolled in United States Government life insurance does not designate a beneficiary under subsection (a) before the insured person dies, or if a designated beneficiary predeceases the insured person, the Secretary shall determine the beneficiary in the following order:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idd9365d7b-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The surviving spouse of the insured person.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idd9365d7c-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> The children of the insured person and descendants of deceased children by representation.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idd9365d7d-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> The parents of the insured person or the survivors of the parents.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idd9365d7e-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> The duly appointed executor or administrator of the estate of the insured person.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idd9365d7f-677f-11ee-8d3c-c5fa3da28a6a" identifier="/us/usc/t38/s1949/b/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><content> Other next of kin of the insured person entitled under the laws of domicile of the insured person at the time of the death of the insured person.</content>
