L. 97–425, title II, § 211, Jan. 7, 1983, 96 Stat. 2245.)","seq_in_title":6078,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch108/schII","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42","level":"title","num":"Title 42—","heading":"THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch108","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 108—","heading":"NUCLEAR WASTE POLICY","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch108/schII","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER II—","heading":"RESEARCH, DEVELOPMENT, AND DEMONSTRATION REGARDING DISPOSAL OF HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE AND SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id8f2ac9ba-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191\"><num value=\"10191\">§ 10191.</num><heading> Purpose</heading>\n<chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">It is the purpose of this subchapter—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id8f2ac9bb-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> to provide direction to the Secretary with respect to the disposal of high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id8f2ac9bc-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><chapeau> to authorize the Secretary, pursuant to this subchapter—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id8f2ac9bd-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191/2/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><content> to provide for the construction, operation, and maintenance of a deep geologic test and evaluation facility; and</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id8f2ac9be-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191/2/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> to provide for a focused and integrated high-level radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel research and development program, including the development of a test and evaluation facility to carry out research and provide an integrated demonstration of the technology for deep geologic disposal of high-level radioactive waste, and the development of the facilities to demonstrate dry storage of spent nuclear fuel; and</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id8f2ac9bf-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s10191/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> to provide for an improved cooperative role between the Federal Government and States, affected Indian tribes, and units of general local government in the siting of a test and evaluation facility.</content>\n</paragraph>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id8f2ac9c0-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/97/425/tII/s211\">Pub.
