<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id8f957251-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102"><num value="13102">§ 13102.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For purposes of this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957252-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The term “Administrator” means the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957253-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> The term “Agency” means the Environmental Protection Agency.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957254-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> The term “toxic chemical” means any substance on the list described in <ref href="/us/usc/t42/s11023/c">section 11023(c) of this title</ref>.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957255-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> The term “release” has the same meaning as provided by <ref href="/us/usc/t42/s11049/8">section 11049(8) of this title</ref>.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957256-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f957257-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/5/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><chapeau> The term “source reduction” means any practice which—</chapeau><clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8f957258-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/5/A/i"><num value="i">(i)</num><content> reduces the amount of any hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant entering any waste stream or otherwise released into the environment (including fugitive emissions) prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal; and</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8f957259-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/5/A/ii"><num value="ii">(ii)</num><content> reduces the hazards to public health and the environment associated with the release of such substances, pollutants, or contaminants.</content>
</clause>

<continuation style="-uslm-lc:I17" class="indent1 firstIndent0">The term includes equipment or technology modifications, process or procedure modifications, reformulation or redesign of products, substitution of raw materials, and improvements in housekeeping, maintenance, training, or inventory control.</continuation>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f95725a-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/5/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> The term “source reduction” does not include any practice which alters the physical, chemical, or biological characteristics or the volume of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant through a process or activity which itself is not integral to and necessary for the production of a product or the providing of a service.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f95725b-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> The term “multi-media” means water, air, and land.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8f95725c-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13102/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> The term “SIC codes” refers to the 2-digit code numbers used for classification of economic activity in the Standard Industrial Classification Manual.</content>
