<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id8fa61458-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506"><num value="13506">§ 13506.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For purposes of this subchapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fa61459-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> the term “advanced manufacturing technology” means processes, equipment, techniques, practices, and capabilities that are applied for the purpose of—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8fa6145a-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> improving the productivity, quality, or energy efficiency of the design, development, testing, or manufacture of a product; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8fa6145b-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> expanding the technical capability to design, develop, test, or manufacture a product that is fundamentally different in character from existing products and that will result in improved energy efficiency;</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fa6145c-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><chapeau> the term “advanced materials” means materials that are processed, synthesized, fabricated, and manufactured to develop high performance properties that exceed the corresponding properties of conventional materials for structural, electronic, magnetic, or photonic applications, or for joining, welding, bonding, or packaging components into complex assemblies, including—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8fa6145d-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> advanced monolithic materials such as metals, ceramics, and polymers;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8fa6145e-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> advanced composite materials such as metal matrix (including intermetallics), polymer matrix, ceramic matrix, continuous fiber ceramic composite, and carbon matrix composites; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id8fa6145f-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/2/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> advanced electronic, magnetic, and photonic materials, including superconducting, semiconductor, electrooptic, magnetooptic, thin-film, and special purpose coating materials used in technologies for energy efficiency, renewable energy, or electric power applications; and</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fa61460-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s13506/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> the term “United States” means the 50 States of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the United States Virgin Islands, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and any other territory or possession of the United States.</content>
