L. 109–58, title IX, § 934, Aug. 8, 2005, 119 Stat. 872.)","seq_in_title":7542,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch149/schIX/ptC","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42","level":"title","num":"Title 42—","heading":"THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch149","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 149—","heading":"NATIONAL ENERGY POLICY AND PROGRAMS","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch149/schIX","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER IX—","heading":"RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch149/schIX/ptC","level":"part","num":"Part C—","heading":"Renewable Energy","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"idad82a69a-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234\"><num value=\"16234\">§ 16234.</num><heading> Concentrating solar power research program</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idad82a69b-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The Secretary shall conduct a program of research and development to evaluate the potential for concentrating solar power for hydrogen production, including cogeneration approaches for both hydrogen and electricity.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idad82a69c-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Administration</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The program shall take advantage of existing facilities to the extent practicable and shall include—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a69d-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> development of optimized technologies that are common to both electricity and hydrogen production;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a69e-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> evaluation of thermochemical cycles for hydrogen production at the temperatures attainable with concentrating solar power;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a69f-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> evaluation of materials issues for the thermochemical cycles described in paragraph (2);</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a6a0-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> cogeneration of solar thermal electric power and photo-synthetic-based hydrogen production;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a6a1-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> system architectures and economics studies; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a6a2-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/b/6\"><num value=\"6\">(6)</num><content> coordination with activities under the Next Generation Nuclear Plant Project established under part B of subchapter VI on high temperature materials, thermochemical cycles, and economic issues.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idad82a6a3-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/c\"><num value=\"c\" class=\"bold\">(c)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Assessment</heading><chapeau style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">In carrying out the program under this section, the Secretary shall—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a6a4-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/c/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> assess conflicting guidance on the economic potential of concentrating solar power for electricity production received from the National Research Council in the report entitled “Renewable Power Pathways: A Review of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Programs” and dated 2000 and subsequent reviews of that report funded by the Department; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"idad82a6a5-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/c/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> provide an assessment of the potential impact of technology used to concentrate solar power for electricity before, or concurrent with, submission of the budget for fiscal year 2008.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"idad82a6a6-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s16234/d\"><num value=\"d\" class=\"bold\">(d)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Report</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">Not later than 5 years after <date date=\"2005-08-08\">August 8, 2005</date>, the Secretary shall provide to Congress a report on the economic and technical potential for electricity or hydrogen production, with or without cogeneration, with concentrating solar power, including the economic and technical feasibility of potential construction of a pilot demonstration facility suitable for commercial production of electricity or hydrogen from concentrating solar power.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"idad82a6a7-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/109/58/tIX/s934\">Pub.
