<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">It is the policy of the United States to support the modernization of the Nation’s electricity transmission and distribution system to maintain a reliable and secure electricity infrastructure that can meet future demand growth and to achieve each of the following, which together characterize a Smart Grid:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22a9-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> Increased use of digital information and controls technology to improve reliability, security, and efficiency of the electric grid.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22aa-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> Dynamic optimization of grid operations and resources, with full cyber-security.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22ab-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> Deployment and integration of distributed resources and generation, including renewable resources.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22ac-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> Development and incorporation of demand response, demand-side resources, and energy-efficiency resources.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22ad-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><content> Deployment of “smart” technologies (real-time, automated, interactive technologies that optimize the physical operation of appliances and consumer devices) for metering, communications concerning grid operations and status, and distribution automation.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22ae-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> Integration of “smart” appliances and consumer devices.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8fea22af-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s17381/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> Deployment and integration of advanced electricity storage and peak-shaving technologies, including plug-in electric and hybrid electric vehicles, and thermal-storage air conditioning.</content>
