<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The Administrator should ensure that NASA maintains a strong aeronautics research portfolio ranging from fundamental research through systems research with specific research goals, including the following:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id8fff09ce-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s18401/1"><num value="1" class="bold">(1)</num><heading class="bold"> Airspace capacity</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate shall address research needs of the Next Generation Air Transportation System, including the ability of the National Airspace System to handle up to 3 times the current travel demand by 2025.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id8fff09cf-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s18401/2"><num value="2" class="bold">(2)</num><heading class="bold"> Environmental sustainability</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The Directorate shall consider and pursue concepts to reduce noise, emissions, and fuel consumption while maintaining high safety standards and shall pursue research related to alternative fuels.</p>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="id8fff09d0-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s18401/3"><num value="3" class="bold">(3)</num><heading class="bold"> Aviation safety</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The Directorate shall proactively address safety challenges with new and current air vehicles and with operations in the Nation’s current and future air transportation system.</p>
