<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="ida4f244bb-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a"><num value="293a">§ 293a.</num><heading> Scholarships for disadvantaged students</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244bc-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> In general</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The Secretary may make a grant to an eligible entity (as defined in subsection (d)(1)) under this section for the awarding of scholarships by schools to any full-time student who is an eligible individual as defined in subsection (d). Such scholarships may be expended only for tuition expenses, other reasonable educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses incurred in the attendance of such school.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244bd-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> Preference in providing scholarships</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The Secretary may not make a grant to an entity under subsection (a) unless the health professions and nursing schools involved agree that, in providing scholarships pursuant to the grant, the schools will give preference to students for whom the costs of attending the schools would constitute a severe financial hardship and, notwithstanding other provisions of this section, to former recipients of scholarships under sections 293 and 293d(d)(2)(B) of this title (as such sections existed on the day before <date date="1998-11-13">November 13, 1998</date>).</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244be-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/c"><num value="c" class="bold">(c)</num><heading class="bold"> Amount of award</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In awarding grants to eligible entities that are health professions and nursing schools, the Secretary shall give priority to eligible entities based on the proportion of graduating students going into primary care, the proportion of underrepresented minority students, and the proportion of graduates working in medically underserved communities.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244bf-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d"><num value="d" class="bold">(d)</num><heading class="bold"> Definitions</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In this section:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244c0-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/1"><num value="1" class="bold">(1)</num><heading class="bold"> Eligible entities</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “eligible entities” means an entity that—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="ida4f244c1-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> is a school of medicine, osteopathic medicine, dentistry, nursing (as defined in <ref href="/us/usc/t42/s296">section 296 of this title</ref>), pharmacy, podiatric medicine, optometry, veterinary medicine, public health, chiropractic, or allied health, a school offering a graduate program in behavioral and mental health practice, or an entity providing programs for the training of physician assistants; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="ida4f244c2-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> is carrying out a program for recruiting and retaining students from disadvantaged backgrounds, including students who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I79" class="indent3 firstIndent-2" id="ida4f244c3-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/2"><num value="2" class="bold">(2)</num><heading class="bold"> Eligible individual</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1">The term “eligible individual” means an individual who—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="ida4f244c4-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> is from a disadvantaged background;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="ida4f244c5-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> has a financial need for a scholarship; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="ida4f244c6-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s293a/d/2/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> is enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) at an eligible health professions or nursing school as a full-time student in a program leading to a degree in a health profession or nursing.</content>
