<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="idabe7bb63-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381"><num value="6381">§ 6381.</num><heading> Verification examinations</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="idabe7bb64-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> Authority of Comptroller General</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The Comptroller General may conduct verification examinations with respect to the books, records, papers, or other documents of—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7bb65-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> any person who is required to submit energy information to the Secretary, the Department of the Interior, or the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission pursuant to any rule, regulation, order, or other legal process of such Secretary, Department or Commission;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7bb66-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><chapeau> any person who is engaged in the production, processing, refining, transportation by pipeline, or distribution (at other than the retail level) of energy resources—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="idabe7bb67-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> if such person has furnished, directly or indirectly, energy information (without regard to whether such information was furnished pursuant to legal requirements) to any Federal agency (other than the Internal Revenue Service), and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="idabe7bb68-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> if the Comptroller General of the United States determines that such information has been or is being used or taken into consideration, in whole or in part, by a Federal agency in carrying out responsibilities committed to such agency; or</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7bb69-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/a/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> any vertically integrated petroleum company with respect to financial information of such company related to energy resource exploration, development, and production and the transportation, refining and marketing of energy resources and energy products.</content>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="idabe7bb6a-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> Request for examination</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">The Comptroller General shall conduct verification examinations of any person or company described in subsection (a), if requested to do so by any duly established committee of the Congress having legislative or oversight responsibilities under the rules of the House of Representatives or of the Senate, with respect to energy matters or any of the laws administered by the Department of the Interior (or the Secretary thereof), the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or the Secretary.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="idabe7bb6b-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/c"><num value="c" class="bold">(c)</num><heading class="bold"> Definitions</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For the purposes of this subchapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7bb6c-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/c/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The term “verification examination” means an examination of such books, records, papers, or other documents of a person or company as the Comptroller General determines necessary and appropriate to assess the accuracy, reliability, and adequacy of the energy information, or financial information, referred to in subsection (a).</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7bb6d-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/c/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> The term “energy information” has the same meaning as such term has in <ref href="/us/usc/t15/s796/e/1">section 796(e)(1) of title 15</ref>.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idabe7e27f-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s6381/c/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> The term “vertically integrated petroleum company” means any person which itself, or through a person which is controlled by, controls, or is under common control with such person, is engaged in the production, refining, and marketing of petroleum products.</content>
