L. 101–239, title VI, §§ 6503(c)(4), 6505, Dec. 19, 1989, 103 Stat. 2278, 2281.)","seq_in_title":1645,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch7/schV","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42","level":"title","num":"Title 42—","heading":"THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch7","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 7—","heading":"SOCIAL SECURITY","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t42/ch7/schV","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER V—","heading":"MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH SERVICES BLOCK GRANT","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"ida6df47bf-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709\"><num value=\"709\">§ 709.</num><heading> Administration of Federal and State programs</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\" id=\"ida6df47c0-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a\"><num value=\"a\">(a)</num><chapeau> The Secretary shall designate an identifiable administrative unit with expertise in maternal and child health within the Department of Health and Human Services, which unit shall be responsible for—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c1-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> the Federal program described in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s702/a\">section 702(a) of this title</ref>;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c2-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> promoting coordination at the Federal level of the activities authorized under this subchapter and under subchapter XIX of this chapter, especially early and periodic screening, diagnosis and treatment, related activities funded by the Departments of Agriculture and Education, and under health block grants and categorical health programs, such as immunizations, administered by the Secretary;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c3-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> disseminating information to the States in such areas as preventive health services and advances in the care and treatment of mothers and children;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c4-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> providing technical assistance, upon request, to the States in such areas as program planning, establishment of goals and objectives, standards of care, and evaluation and in developing consistent and accurate data collection mechanisms in order to report the information required under <ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s706/a/2\">section 706(a)(2) of this title</ref>;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c5-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> in cooperation with the National Center for Health Statistics and in a manner that avoids duplication of data collection, collection, maintenance, and dissemination of information relating to the health status and health service needs of mothers and children in the United States;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c6-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/6\"><num value=\"6\">(6)</num><content> assisting in the preparation of reports to the Congress on the activities funded and accomplishments achieved under this subchapter from the information required to be reported by the States under sections 705(a) and 706 of this title; and <ref class=\"footnoteRef\" idref=\"fn002611\">1</ref><note type=\"footnote\" id=\"fn002611\"><num>1</num> So in original. The word “and” probably should not appear.</note></content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c7-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/7\"><num value=\"7\">(7)</num><content> assisting States in the development of care coordination services (as defined in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s701/b/3\">section 701(b)(3) of this title</ref>); and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"ida6df47c8-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/a/8\"><num value=\"8\">(8)</num><content> developing and making available to the State agency (or agencies) administering the State’s program under this subchapter a national directory listing by State the toll-free numbers described in <ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s705/a/5/E\">section 705(a)(5)(E) of this title</ref>.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\" id=\"ida6df6ed9-09a0-11eb-a85b-f5cef3d06f4d\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s709/b\"><num value=\"b\">(b)</num><content> The State health agency of each State shall be responsible for the administration (or supervision of the administration) of programs carried out with allotments made to the State under this subchapter, except that, in the case of a State which on <date date=\"1967-07-01\">July 1, 1967</date>, provided for administration (or supervision thereof) of the State plan under this subchapter (as in effect on such date) by a State agency other than the State health agency, that State shall be considered to comply <ref class=\"footnoteRef\" idref=\"fn002612\">2</ref><note type=\"footnote\" id=\"fn002612\"><num>2</num> So in original.
