<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">As used in this chapter, unless the context otherwise requires:</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8db-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> The term “includes” and variants thereof should be read as if the phrase “but is not limited to” were also set forth.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8dc-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> The term “Program” means the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program established under <ref href="/us/usc/t42/s7704">section 7704 of this title</ref>.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8dd-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> The term “seismic” and variants thereof mean having to do with, or caused by earthquakes.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8de-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> The term “State” means each of the States of the United States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, and any other territory or possession of the United States.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8df-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><content> The term “United States” means, when used in a geographical sense, all of the States as defined in paragraph (4).</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8e0-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> The term “lifeline infrastructure” means public works and utilities, including transportation facilities and infrastructure, oil and gas pipelines, electrical power and communication facilities and infrastructure, and water supply and sewage treatment facilities.</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id8eb1c8e1-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f" identifier="/us/usc/t42/s7703/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> The term “Program agencies” means the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the United States Geological Survey, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.</content>
