This section may not be construed to prohibit the Secretary from deferring to local building codes that meet the requirements of the seismic safety standards developed under this section.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id8eb46178-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s7704a/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Standards</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The standards shall be designed to reduce the risk of loss of life to building occupants to the maximum extent feasible and to reduce the risk of shake-related property damage to the maximum extent practicable.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id8eb46179-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s7704a/c\"><num value=\"c\" class=\"bold\">(c)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Consultation</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">In carrying out this section, the Secretary shall consult with the Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and may utilize the resources under the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (established under the Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act of 1977 [<ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s7701\">42 U.S.C. 7701</ref> et seq.]) and any other resources as may be required to carry out the activities under this section.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id8eb4617a-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/101/625/tIX/s947\">Pub.
