The Office shall be headed by a Director, who shall advise the Secretary on the effects of current policies and proposed statutory, regulatory, administrative, and budgetary changes in the programs established under subchapters XVIII and XIX on the financial viability of small rural hospitals, the ability of rural areas (and rural hospitals in particular) to attract and retain physicians and other health professionals, and access to (and the quality of) health care in rural areas.</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\" id=\"id89e302ed-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b\"><num value=\"b\">(b)</num><chapeau> In addition to advising the Secretary with respect to the matters specified in subsection (a), the Director, through the Office, shall—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id89e302ee-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> oversee compliance with the requirements of <ref href=\"/us/usc/t42/s1302/b\">section 1302(b) of this title</ref> and section 4403 of the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (as such section pertains to rural health issues),</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id89e329ff-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><chapeau> establish and maintain a clearinghouse for collecting and disseminating information on—</chapeau><subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id89e32a00-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/2/A\"><num value=\"A\">(A)</num><content> rural health care issues, including rural mental health, rural infant mortality prevention, and rural occupational safety and preventive health promotion,</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id89e32a01-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/2/B\"><num value=\"B\">(B)</num><content> research findings relating to rural health care, and</content>\n</subparagraph>\n<subparagraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I13\" class=\"indent2\" id=\"id89e32a02-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/2/C\"><num value=\"C\">(C)</num><content> innovative approaches to the delivery of health care in rural areas, including programs providing community-based mental health services, pre-natal and infant care services, and rural occupational safety and preventive health education and promotion,</content>\n</subparagraph>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id89e32a03-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> coordinate the activities within the Department that relate to rural health care,</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id89e32a04-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> provide information to the Secretary and others in the Department with respect to the activities, of other Federal departments and agencies, that relate to rural health care, including activities relating to rural mental health, rural infant mortality, and rural occupational safety and preventive health promotion, and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id89e32a05-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t42/s912/b/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> administer grants, cooperative agreements, and contracts to provide technical assistance and other activities as necessary to support activities related to improving health care in rural areas.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id89e32a06-86fb-11e9-b915-8b3e54686b9f\">(<ref href=\"/us/act/1935-08-14/ch531\">Aug. 14, 1935, ch. 531</ref>, title VII, § 711, as added <ref href=\"/us/pl/100/203/tIV/s4401\">Pub.
