<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id0eaa9388-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256"><num value="256">§ 256.</num><heading> Coordination for interconnectivity</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id0eaa9389-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> Purpose</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">It is the purpose of this section—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id0eaa938a-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> to promote nondiscriminatory accessibility by the broadest number of users and vendors of communications products and services to public telecommunications networks used to provide telecommunications service through—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id0eaaba9b-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/a/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> coordinated public telecommunications network planning and design by telecommunications carriers and other providers of telecommunications service; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id0eaaba9c-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/a/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> public telecommunications network interconnectivity, and interconnectivity of devices with such networks used to provide telecommunications service; and</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id0eaaba9d-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> to ensure the ability of users and information providers to seamlessly and transparently transmit and receive information between and across telecommunications networks.</content>
</paragraph>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id0eaaba9e-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> Commission functions</heading><chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In carrying out the purposes of this section, the Commission—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id0eaaba9f-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> shall establish procedures for Commission oversight of coordinated network planning by telecommunications carriers and other providers of telecommunications service for the effective and efficient interconnection of public telecommunications networks used to provide telecommunications service; and</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id0eaabaa0-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><chapeau> may participate, in a manner consistent with its authority and practice prior to <date date="1996-02-08">February 8, 1996</date>, in the development by appropriate industry standards-setting organizations of public telecommunications network interconnectivity standards that promote access to—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id0eaae1b1-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> public telecommunications networks used to provide telecommunications service;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id0eaae1b2-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> network capabilities and services by individuals with disabilities; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id0eaae1b3-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/b/2/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> information services by subscribers of rural telephone companies.</content>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id0eaae1b4-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/c"><num value="c" class="bold">(c)</num><heading class="bold"> Commission’s authority</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">Nothing in this section shall be construed as expanding or limiting any authority that the Commission may have under law in effect before <date date="1996-02-08">February 8, 1996</date>.</p>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="id0eaae1b5-188c-11eb-9054-eff4ebea7f1f" identifier="/us/usc/t47/s256/d"><num value="d" class="bold">(d)</num><heading class="bold"> “Public telecommunications network interconnectivity” defined</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">As used in this section, the term “public telecommunications network interconnectivity” means the ability of two or more public telecommunications networks used to provide telecommunications service to communicate and exchange information without degeneration, and to interact in concert with one another.</p>
