<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id34eb3a90-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s20137"><num value="20137">§ 20137.</num><heading> Event recorders</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id34eb3a91-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s20137/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Definition</inline>.—</heading><chapeau>In this section, “event recorder” means a device that—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id34eb3a92-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s20137/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> records train speed, hot box detection, throttle position, brake application, brake operations, and any other function the Secretary of Transportation considers necessary to record to assist in monitoring the safety of train operation, such as time and signal indication; and</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id34eb3a93-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s20137/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> is designed to resist tampering.</content>

</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id34eb3a94-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s20137/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Regulations and Orders</inline>.—</heading><content>Not later than <date date="1989-12-22">December 22, 1989</date>, the Secretary shall prescribe regulations and issue orders that may be necessary to enhance safety by requiring that a train be equipped with an event recorder not later than one year after the regulations are prescribed and the orders are issued. However, if the Secretary finds it is impracticable to equip trains within that one-year period, the Secretary may extend the period to a date that is not later than 18 months after the regulations are prescribed and the orders are issued.</content>
