<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id351f912f-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501"><num value="30501">§ 30501.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">In this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9130-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> “automobile” has the same meaning given that term in <ref href="/us/usc/t49/s32901/a">section 32901(a) of this title</ref>.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9131-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> “certificate of title” means a document issued by a State showing ownership of an automobile.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9132-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> “insurance carrier” means an individual or entity engaged in the business of underwriting automobile insurance.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9133-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><chapeau> “junk automobile” means an automobile that—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f9134-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/4/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> is incapable of operating on public streets, roads, and highways; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f9135-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/4/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> has no value except as a source of parts or scrap.</content>
</subparagraph>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9136-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><chapeau> “junk yard” means an individual or entity engaged in the business of acquiring or owning junk automobiles for—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f9137-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/5/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> resale in their entirety or as spare parts; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f9138-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/5/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> rebuilding, restoration, or crushing.</content>
</subparagraph>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f9139-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> “operator” means the individual or entity authorized or designated as the operator of the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System under <ref href="/us/usc/t49/s30502/b">section 30502(b) of this title</ref>, or the Attorney General, if there is no authorized or designated individual or entity.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f913a-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> “salvage automobile” means an automobile that is damaged by collision, fire, flood, accident, trespass, or other event, to the extent that its fair salvage value plus the cost of repairing the automobile for legal operation on public streets, roads, and highways would be more than the fair market value of the automobile immediately before the event that caused the damage.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id351f913b-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/8"><num value="8">(8)</num><chapeau> “salvage yard” means an individual or entity engaged in the business of acquiring or owning salvage automobiles for—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f913c-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/8/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> resale in their entirety or as spare parts; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id351f913d-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s30501/8/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> rebuilding, restoration, or crushing.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
