<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" id="idbfe3d256-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101"><num value="32101">§ 32101.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="blockIndent0">In this part (except chapter 329 and except as provided in section 33101)—</chapeau><paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3d257-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> “bumper standard” means a minimum performance standard that substantially reduces—</chapeau><subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3d258-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> the damage to the front or rear end of a passenger motor vehicle from a low-speed collision (including a collision with a fixed barrier) or from towing the vehicle; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3d259-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> the cost of repairing the damage.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3d25a-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> “insurer” means a person in the business of issuing, or reinsuring any part of, a passenger motor vehicle insurance policy.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3d25b-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><chapeau> “interstate commerce” means commerce between a place in a State and—</chapeau><subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3f96c-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/3/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> a place in another State; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3f96d-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/3/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> another place in the same State through another State.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3f96e-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> “make”, when describing a passenger motor vehicle, means the trade name of the manufacturer of the vehicle.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3f96f-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/5"><num value="5">(5)</num><chapeau> “manufacturer” means a person—</chapeau><subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3f970-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/5/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> manufacturing or assembling passenger motor vehicles or passenger motor vehicle equipment; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe3f971-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/5/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> importing motor vehicles or motor vehicle equipment for resale.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3f972-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/6"><num value="6">(6)</num><content> “model”, when describing a passenger motor vehicle, means a category of passenger motor vehicles based on the size, style, and type of a make of vehicle.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3f973-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/7"><num value="7">(7)</num><content> “motor vehicle” means a vehicle driven or drawn by mechanical power and manufactured primarily for use on public streets, roads, and highways, but does not include a vehicle operated only on a rail line.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe3f974-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/8"><num value="8">(8)</num><content> “motor vehicle accident” means an accident resulting from the maintenance or operation of a passenger motor vehicle or passenger motor vehicle equipment.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe42085-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/9"><num value="9">(9)</num><content> “multipurpose passenger vehicle” means a passenger motor vehicle constructed on a truck chassis or with special features for occasional off-road operation.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe42086-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/10"><num value="10">(10)</num><chapeau> “passenger motor vehicle” means a motor vehicle with motive power designed to carry not more than 12 individuals, but does not include—</chapeau><subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe42087-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/10/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> a motorcycle; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe42088-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/10/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> a truck not designed primarily to carry its operator or passengers.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe42089-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/11"><num value="11">(11)</num><chapeau> “passenger motor vehicle equipment” means—</chapeau><subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe4208a-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/11/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> a system, part, or component of a passenger motor vehicle as originally made;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe4208b-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/11/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> a similar part or component made or sold for replacement or improvement of a system, part, or component, or as an accessory or addition to a passenger motor vehicle; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph class="indent2" id="idbfe4208c-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/11/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> a device made or sold for use in towing a passenger motor vehicle.</content>
</subparagraph>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe4208d-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/12"><num value="12">(12)</num><content> “State” means a State of the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph class="indent1" id="idbfe4479e-f63e-11e2-8470-abc29ba29c4d" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32101/13"><num value="13">(13)</num><content> “United States district court” means a district court of the United States, a United States court for Guam, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa, and the district court for the Northern Mariana Islands.</content>

<p style="-uslm-lc:I21" class="indent0">In clause (1), the text of 15:1901(11) is omitted as surplus because the complete title of the Secretary of Transportation is used the first time the term appears in a section. The definition of “property loss reduction standard” is combined with the definition of “bumper standard” because the former term is used only in the definition of the latter term.
