<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id353c40fa-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> buyers are entitled to rely on the odometer reading as an accurate indication of the mileage of the vehicle;</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id353c40fb-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/a/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> an accurate indication of the mileage assists a buyer in deciding on the safety and reliability of the vehicle; and</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id353c40fc-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/a/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><content> motor vehicles move in, or affect, interstate and foreign commerce.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id353c40fd-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><heading> <inline class="small-caps">Purposes</inline>.—</heading><chapeau>The purposes of this chapter are—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id353c40fe-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/b/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> to prohibit tampering with motor vehicle odometers; and</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id353c40ff-ec39-11e5-b01e-e2270cb35279" identifier="/us/usc/t49/s32701/b/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> to provide safeguards to protect purchasers in the sale of motor vehicles with altered or reset odometers.</content>
