<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id4fe2d023-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501"><num value="1501">§ 1501.</num><heading> Definitions</heading>
<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For the purpose of this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id4fe2d024-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> “State” means a State or territory or possession of the United States;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id4fe2d025-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> “State or local agency” means the executive branch of a State, municipality, or other political subdivision of a State, or an agency or department thereof, or the executive branch of the District of Columbia, or an agency or department thereof;</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id4fe2d026-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><content> “Federal agency” means an Executive agency or other agency of the United States, but does not include a member bank of the Federal Reserve System; and</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id4fe2d027-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4"><num value="4">(4)</num><chapeau> “State or local officer or employee” means an individual employed by a State or local agency whose principal employment is in connection with an activity which is financed in whole or in part by loans or grants made by the United States or a Federal agency, but does not include—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id4fe2d028-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> an individual who exercises no functions in connection with that activity; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id4fe2d029-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><chapeau> an individual employed by an educational or research institution, establishment, agency, or system which is supported in whole or in part by—</chapeau><clause style="-uslm-lc:I14" class="indent3" id="id4fe2d02a-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4/B/i"><num value="i">(i)</num><content> a State or political subdivision thereof;</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I14" class="indent3" id="id4fe2d02b-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4/B/ii"><num value="ii">(ii)</num><content> the District of Columbia; or</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I14" class="indent3" id="id4fe2d02c-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s1501/4/B/iii"><num value="iii">(iii)</num><content> a recognized religious, philanthropic, or cultural organization.</content>
