<chapeau style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">For the purpose of this chapter—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id500b3f9e-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><chapeau> “agency” means—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3f9f-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> an Executive agency;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa0-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> a military department;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa1-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> an agency in the judicial branch;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa2-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/D"><num value="D">(D)</num><content> the Library of Congress;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa3-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/E"><num value="E">(E)</num><content> the Botanic Garden; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa4-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F"><num value="F">(F)</num><chapeau> the Office of the Architect of the Capitol; but does not include—</chapeau><clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa5-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/i"><num value="i">(i)</num><content> a Government controlled corporation;</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa6-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/ii"><num value="ii">(ii)</num><content> the Tennessee Valley Authority;</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa7-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/iii"><num value="iii">(iii)</num><content> the Virgin Islands Corporation;</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa8-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/iv"><num value="iv">(iv)</num><content> the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice;</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3fa9-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/v"><num value="v">(v)</num><content> the Central Intelligence Agency; and</content>
</clause>
<clause style="-uslm-lc:I13" class="indent2" id="id500b3faa-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/1/F/vi"><num value="vi">(vi)</num><content> the National Security Agency, Department of Defense; and</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id500b3fab-f67c-11e5-87ee-a95dc0577289" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s3401/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> “part-time career employment” means part-time employment of 16 to 32 hours a week (or 32 to 64 hours during a biweekly pay period in the case of a flexible or compressed work schedule under subchapter II of chapter 61 of this title) under a schedule consisting of an equal or varied number of hours per day, whether in a position which would be part-time without regard to this section or one established to allow job-sharing or comparable arrangements, but does not include employment on a temporary or intermittent basis.</content>

<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I23" class="indent2"><num value="D">“(D)</num><content> benefits students who must finance their own education or vocational training;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I23" class="indent2"><num value="E">“(E)</num><content> benefits the Government, as an employer, by increasing productivity and job satisfaction, while lowering turnover rates and absenteeism, offering management more flexibility in meeting work requirements, and filling shortages in various occupations; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I23" class="indent2"><num value="F">“(F)</num><content> benefits society by offering a needed alternative for those individuals who require or prefer shorter hours (despite the reduced income), thus increasing jobs available to reduce unemployment while retaining the skills of individuals who have training and experience.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I21" class="indent0"><num value="b">“(b)</num><content> The purpose of this Act [enacting this chapter, amending sections 8347, 8716, 8906, and 8913 of this title, and enacting provisions set out as notes under this section and sections 3407 and 8906 of this title] is to provide increased part-time career employment opportunities throughout the Federal Government.”</content>
