<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="id5a4dd6f6-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708"><num value="8708">§ 8708.</num><heading> Government contributions</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6f7-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/a"><num value="a">(a)</num><content> For each period in which an employee is insured under a policy of insurance purchased by the Office of Personnel Management under <ref href="/us/usc/t5/s8709">section 8709 of this title</ref>, a sum equal to one-half the amount which is withheld from the pay of the employee under <ref href="/us/usc/t5/s8707">section 8707 of this title</ref> shall be contributed from the appropriation or fund which is used to pay him.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6f8-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/b"><num value="b">(b)</num><content> When an employee is paid by the Chief Administrative Officer of the House of Representatives, the Chief Administrative Officer may contribute the sum required by subsection (a) of this section from the applicable accounts of the House of Representatives.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6f9-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/c"><num value="c">(c)</num><content> When the employee is an elected official, the sum required by subsection (a) of this section is contributed from an appropriation or fund available for payment of other salaries of the same office or establishment.</content>
</subsection>
<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6fa-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d"><num value="d">(d)</num><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6fb-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> Except as otherwise provided in this subsection, for each period in which an employee continues life insurance after retirement or while in receipt of compensation under subchapter I of chapter 81 of this title because of disease or injury to the employee, as provided under <ref href="/us/usc/t5/s8706/b">section 8706(b) of this title</ref>, a sum equal to one-half of the amount which is withheld from the employee’s annuity or compensation under <ref href="/us/usc/t5/s8707">section 8707 of this title</ref> shall be contributed by the Office from annual appropriations which are authorized to be made for that purpose and which may be made available until expended.</content>
</paragraph>
<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd6fc-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><chapeau> Contributions under this subsection—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5a4dd6fd-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/2/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> shall not be made other than with respect to individuals who retire, or commence receiving compensation, after <date date="1989-12-31">December 31, 1989</date>;</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5a4dd6fe-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/2/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> shall not be made with respect to any individual for months after the calendar month in which such individual becomes 65 years of age; and</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5a4dd6ff-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/2/C"><num value="C">(C)</num><content> shall, in the case of any individual who elects coverage under subparagraph (B) of <ref href="/us/usc/t5/s8706/b/3">section 8706(b)(3) of this title</ref>, be equal to the amount which would apply under this subsection if such individual had instead elected coverage under subparagraph (A) of such section.</content>
</subparagraph>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0" id="id5a4dd700-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/3"><num value="3">(3)</num><chapeau> The United States Postal Service shall pay the contributions required under this subsection with respect to any individual who—</chapeau><subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5a4dd701-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/3/A"><num value="A">(A)</num><content> first becomes an annuitant by reason of retirement from employment with the United States Postal Service after <date date="1989-12-31">December 31, 1989</date>; or</content>
</subparagraph>
<subparagraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="id5a4dd702-d2f2-11e9-8bc3-c6fdab7b720a" identifier="/us/usc/t5/s8708/d/3/B"><num value="B">(B)</num><content> commences receiving compensation under subchapter I of chapter 81 of this title (because of disease or injury to the individual) after <date date="1989-12-31">December 31, 1989</date>, if the position last held by the individual before commencing to receive such compensation was within the United States Postal Service.</content>
