L. 112–166, § 2(f)(4), Aug. 10, 2012, 126 Stat. 1285.)","seq_in_title":140,"parent_identifier":"/us/usc/t6/ch1/schV","ancestors":[{"identifier":"/us/usc/t6","level":"title","num":"Title 6—","heading":"DOMESTIC SECURITY","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t6/ch1","level":"chapter","num":"CHAPTER 1—","heading":"HOMELAND SECURITY ORGANIZATION","status":null,"is_section":false},{"identifier":"/us/usc/t6/ch1/schV","level":"subchapter","num":"SUBCHAPTER V—","heading":"NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT","status":null,"is_section":false}],"xml":"<section xmlns=\"http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0\" xmlns:xsi=\"http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance\" xmlns:dc=\"http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/\" xmlns:dcterms=\"http://purl.org/dc/terms/\" style=\"-uslm-lc:I80\" id=\"id59cccf01-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e\"><num value=\"321e\">§ 321e.</num><heading> Chief Medical Officer</heading><subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id59cccf02-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/a\"><num value=\"a\" class=\"bold\">(a)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> In general</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">There is in the Department a Chief Medical Officer, who shall be appointed by the President.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id59cccf03-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/b\"><num value=\"b\" class=\"bold\">(b)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Qualifications</heading><content><p style=\"-uslm-lc:I11\" class=\"indent0\">The individual appointed as Chief Medical Officer shall possess a demonstrated ability in and knowledge of medicine and public health.</p>\n</content>\n</subsection>\n<subsection style=\"-uslm-lc:I19\" class=\"indent2 firstIndent-2\" id=\"id59cccf04-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c\"><num value=\"c\" class=\"bold\">(c)</num><heading class=\"bold\"> Responsibilities</heading><chapeau>The Chief Medical Officer shall have the primary responsibility within the Department for medical issues related to natural disasters, acts of terrorism, and other man-made disasters, including—</chapeau><paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf05-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/1\"><num value=\"1\">(1)</num><content> serving as the principal advisor to the Secretary and the Administrator on medical and public health issues;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf06-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/2\"><num value=\"2\">(2)</num><content> coordinating the biodefense activities of the Department;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf07-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/3\"><num value=\"3\">(3)</num><content> ensuring internal and external coordination of all medical preparedness and response activities of the Department, including training, exercises, and equipment support;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf08-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/4\"><num value=\"4\">(4)</num><content> serving as the Department’s primary point of contact with the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Defense, the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and other Federal departments or agencies, on medical and public health issues;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf09-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/5\"><num value=\"5\">(5)</num><content> serving as the Department’s primary point of contact for State, local, and tribal governments, the medical community, and others within and outside the Department, with respect to medical and public health matters;</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf0a-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/6\"><num value=\"6\">(6)</num><content> discharging, in coordination with the Under Secretary for Science and Technology, the responsibilities of the Department related to Project Bioshield; and</content>\n</paragraph>\n<paragraph style=\"-uslm-lc:I12\" class=\"indent1\" id=\"id59cccf0b-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\" identifier=\"/us/usc/t6/s321e/c/7\"><num value=\"7\">(7)</num><content> performing such other duties relating to such responsibilities as the Secretary may require.</content>\n</paragraph>\n</subsection>\n<sourceCredit id=\"id59cccf0c-f67c-11e5-b96b-f3e1d2b9a904\">(<ref href=\"/us/pl/107/296/tV\">Pub.
