<section xmlns="http://xml.house.gov/schemas/uslm/1.0" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:dcterms="http://purl.org/dc/terms/" style="-uslm-lc:I80" id="idbfa61a6d-aaf5-11e3-a8cb-a7a72594c0f9" identifier="/us/usc/t7/s7516"><num value="7516">§ 7516.</num><heading> Settlement and adjustment of claims</heading><subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="idbfa61a6e-aaf5-11e3-a8cb-a7a72594c0f9" identifier="/us/usc/t7/s7516/a"><num value="a" class="bold">(a)</num><heading class="bold"> In general</heading><chapeau>The Secretary or a designee of the Secretary shall have the authority to—</chapeau><paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idbfa61a6f-aaf5-11e3-a8cb-a7a72594c0f9" identifier="/us/usc/t7/s7516/a/1"><num value="1">(1)</num><content> determine the amount of, settle, and adjust any claim arising under this chapter; and</content>

<paragraph style="-uslm-lc:I12" class="indent1" id="idbfa61a70-aaf5-11e3-a8cb-a7a72594c0f9" identifier="/us/usc/t7/s7516/a/2"><num value="2">(2)</num><content> waive such a claim if the Secretary determines that to do so will serve the purposes of this chapter.</content>

<subsection style="-uslm-lc:I19" class="indent2 firstIndent-2" id="idbfa61a71-aaf5-11e3-a8cb-a7a72594c0f9" identifier="/us/usc/t7/s7516/b"><num value="b" class="bold">(b)</num><heading class="bold"> Litigation</heading><content><p style="-uslm-lc:I11" class="indent0">Nothing contained in this section shall be construed to diminish the authority of the Attorney General of the United States under <ref href="/us/usc/t28/s516">section 516 of title 28</ref> to conduct litigation on behalf of the United States.</p>
